Austerlitz Volunteer Fire Company, Inc.
801

All fire apparatus is numbered to facilitate radio communication.
All AVFC apparatus numbers start with 80.
801 is our "Class A Pumper." When it gets to a fire 1st it is set up to directly fight the fire.  When it gets there after Spencertown it acts as a water supply pumper.
It carries 1000 gallons of water.  It has a 1000 gal/minute pump.
It has 1000 feet of large diameter 4" hose for water supply.
It has 2 preconnected 1 ¾" "attack lines" and another 300' in reserve.  It also has 300' of 3" firefighting hose with a high volume nozzle.
It has 3 10' lengths of "hard suction" which enable it to get water from hydrants, ponds, & rivers.  It can also be supplied with water from another pumper or from tankers.
It carries six "air-packs" which are used by "entry firefighters."  We recently purchased 6 portable radios which are integrated into the air-pack face masks which makes a dangerous job somewhat safer.
We also carry a lot of other specialized equipment.  The attached inventory will show you what we have and where it is.

802

8O2 is a dedicated "source" pumper.  It carries no water.  Instead it seeks a water source and pumps water to the scene through 5" large diameter hose or fills tankers which then drive the water to the scene.
The Austerlitz Fire District is served by 2 fire companies:  AVFC and the Spencertown Fire Company.  Both companies respond together to all fires in the District.  In our rural community finding water for the fire can be challenging.  Each company operates a specialized piece of apparatus for this. The AVFC has 802 and SFC has 514 which is a 1,800 gallon tanker.
With the tanker and 2 pumpers we carry 4,000 gallons to the fire.  With the source truck and 2 pumpers we carry 4,000 feet of large diameter hose.  This means that any given water source can cover well over a mile of road frontage (1/2 mi. each way) plus a long driveway by direct pumping.  Further than that we use tankers.
802 has several interesting features to perform its mission.  It is a lightweight 4 wheel  drive vehicle.  It has an extra large water intake port which enables it to pump over 1000 gal/min more than 2,000 feet.  It carries 2 350 gal/min portable pumps with auxiliary hose that allow it to find undeveloped water sources as far as 300' beyond where it can be driven. The primary purpose of the portable pumps is water supply but this vehicle is also used to pump out basements during flood conditions.
The Austerlitz Volunteer  Fire Company has been designated by the IRS as a 501,c,3 charitable organization.

8060

8060 (Photo by  Joe Cordato) is a 4 wheel drive all terrain vehicle.  It is the latest addition to our fleet.
This vehicle is designed to fight brush fires and to evacuate patients from remote locations.
Austerlitz has more State Forest land than any other town in Columbia County.  We also have extensive mountainous, forested private land.  Brush fires and accidents regularly generate many of our calls.  We have long needed the ATV which was delivered last year.
For fighting brush fires the ATV has a 100 gal water tank and a small gasoline pump.  The effectiveness of the water is extended about 4 times by adding a foaming agent to it.  The gasoline pump lets the ATV apply water while it is being driven.
For rescue work there is a rack on the unit which can hold a person in a stretcher.
The trailer, which was fabricated one of our members, can be used first to transport the ATV to the scene and then get hitched to the ATV itself to move personnel and equipment.
